Bekal Fort

FortBekal stands towering over the sea at Bekal, 16kms from the nearest town Kasargode. The Fort is believed to be built in the 1650s. The largest and the best preserved of all forts in Kerala, it has had a turbulent history. It the 18th century, Tipu Sultan captured this fort. Later it was wrested from his hands by the British.

The sea bastion, underground tunnels, and the observation tower are impressive sights. Bekal is just 3 ½ hours drive from Kozhikode.

Cochin

Cochin, widely known as the Queen of the Arabian Sea, is enormously rich in heritage. It is the gateway and commercial capital of Kerala now.

The well trained guides of OSCON Holidays will brief you on the eventful history of this city which began when a major flood in AD 1341 threw open the estuary at Cochin, turning it into one of the finest natural harbors in the World. It became the first European township in India when the Portuguese settled here in the 15th century. Subsequently, it was the major center of commerce and trade with the Arabs, the Chinese, the Dutch & the British.

For families who love to discover new things and take home sweet memories, Cochin offers a lot. Spend at least one full day to nostalgically hang around Cochin and visit some monuments of immense historical value. Go on a 3 hour tour to the Hill Palace Museum, set inside the erstwhile residence of the Royal family of Cochin, where hundreds of interesting exhibits including paintings, carvings and other royal antiquities displayed. The Dutch Palace was built by the Portuguese and presented to the Cochin Royal family in 1555. It acquired the name 'Dutch Palace' after its extensive renovation by The Dutch in 1663. The Cochin Rajas held their coronation ceremonies in the Central Hall of this building. Jewish Synagogue, built in 1568, is the oldest synagogue in the Commonwealth. History of the Jews in Cochin is well documented here. Various antiquities of immense historical significance can be seen here. St. Francis Church was built by Portuguese in 1503 and considered to be the oldest existing European church in India. Vasco da Gama, was buried here in 1524 before his remains were transferred to Lisbon in 1538. The massive, cantilevered Chinese Fishing Nets, made of teak wood and bamboo poles, were erected by traders from the court of Kublai Khan between AD1350 and AD1450.
