Bekal Fort

FortBekal stands towering over the sea at Bekal, 16kms from the nearest town Kasargode. The Fort is believed to be built in the 1650s. The largest and the best preserved of all forts in Kerala, it has had a turbulent history. It the 18th century, Tipu Sultan captured this fort. Later it was wrested from his hands by the British.

The sea bastion, underground tunnels, and the observation tower are impressive sights. Bekal is just 3 ½ hours drive from Kozhikode.

Cochin

Cochin, widely known as the Queen of the Arabian Sea, is enormously rich in heritage. It is the gateway and commercial capital of Kerala now.

St. Francis Church was built by Portuguese in 1503 and considered to be the oldest existing European church in India. Vasco da Gama, was buried here in 1524 before his remains were transferred to Lisbon in 1538. The massive, cantilevered Chinese Fishing Nets, made of teak wood and bamboo poles, were erected by traders from the court of Kublai Khan between AD1350 and AD1450.
